The Ruby Mountains, a half hour from Elko, offer unparalelled hiking
in an alpine setting.
The trails to Island, Dollar, Lamoille, and
Favre lakes, and Liberty Pass and the Ruby Crest Trail leave
from the top of Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountain Range.
We'll carry lunch, and
bird and flower books and meander through pine forests and wildflower
meadows, past an "English flower garden" on the lookout for
the great variety of birds that make the Ruby Mountain range
some of the most beautiful alpine country in the U.S
Many travel to the Rubies purposefully to see this shy bird along with
the Black Rosy Finch which lives with the Snow Cock on the very
tip of mountain peaks. The elusive
Himalayan Snow Partrige lives in only two mountain ranges in
the world, the Himalayan and the Ruby Mountain range. These
birds are difficult to spot and require extensive hiking/horseback.If you’re aiming for
either of these targets call us for information.
The Ruby Marshes
offers excellent birding with 257 different species of birds.
We'll drive to the south side of the Rubies where a spring gushes out
from limestone layers to form the valley marsh, offering great fishing and fantastic birding.
The Wildlife Refuge is closed to boating in early spring to protect
nesting sites.
As with many migratory sites spring and fall are prime for
visits.

Tuscarora Tours:
One place we love to visit is the old gold mining town, Tuscarora. Some
of the old buildings still stand, but now there’s the added attraction
of artists. The town has become an artist colony, of sorts, with
a pottery school, and artists’ studios showcasing jewelry, watercolor,
pastel, oil, plein air paintings, and glass beads. It’s fun to stroll
the dusty streets and talk with people who have moved here to
escape the big city life.

Wild Mustang Horses:
Nevada is the most mountainous of the lower forty eight states.
Geologically
Nevada has a "basin and range" topography, meaning that Nevada is a series
of mountain ranges separated by wide open basins, and these wide valleys
are home to over 50% of the nation’s wild horse population.
Two
hours from Elko we’ll be in wild horse country, also home to mule
deer, pronghorn antelope, coyote, bobcat, elk, and mountain lion.
The horses normally are in small groups of 10-12 led by a stallion; they
often visit watering holes which is where we’ll look for them.
